Fantastic portable DVD/DivX player!

Review Date: November 7, 2008
Reviewer: Ki Park,
I read many reviews about portable DVD and DivX players. I wanted to DivX player as a DVD holds about 2 hours of movie where as a DVD-R media holds about 6-7 hours of DivX/AVI movie file which is excellent for a long trip w/o switching the DVDs in the middle and etc. This certainly plays DivX/AVI files very well.

I was bit worried about the volume as I read a lot of complains about sound being not lound enough on other products. This I don't see how a volume could be a problem. It gets very very lound at the highest volume (w/o the headphone) and I can't imagine a volume could be a problem unless the file itself was recorded at a very low volume.

I ordered a separate case that I can use to attach between the headrests, but I shouldn't have. The bag that comes with this is made so that I can easily make it sit between the front seats with a bit of creativity.

Image quality is excellent compare to TV screen, but probably brilliant comparing to other portable DVD players. I am pleased with what I see from it.

The control buttons at the front does bother a bit, but once you have it set and start playing, you don't really need to touch those buttons, so not a huge problem.

One thing.. this doesn't come with A/V cord as listed by Amazon. Only DVD-LS865 model comes with A/V cord.

Headrest bracket is included and I haven't used it yet, but it looks to be excellent, stable, and simple to install. And simple to attach and detach the DVD player unit.

I can't wait to take a road trip with our two small kids (3 and half, and nearly 2 years ancient) and this unit playing the movies... hopefully they will sit through and behave. :)
Brilliant

As a mother, I found this to be a fantastic product. It met all of our needs, which was a DVD player for the car for our 2 year ancient's DVD (cartoons).

We looked at a lot of other models and this one was well worth the money. Brilliant quality for what we needed.

The headrest attachment is simple to install.

We recommend it!

Panasonic DVD-LS855 8.5 Widescreen Portable DVD Player- Black

For me the largest factor in buying a portable DVD player was durability. After reading reviews of many players I selected the Panasonic DVD-LS85. I bought two of the factory refurbished players. Both units came in a sealed Panasonic box. The players looked just like new. They even had the plastic film on the screen. These players are well made and have the "feel" of a high quality unit. The controls are simple to use. There is no remote, but that wasn't an issue for me (I don't need it). The screen is bright and clear. The manual says the battery will last 3 hours with the screen set on highest brightness level or 6 hours with the screen set on the lowest bright level. We've played a few movies and the battery lasted as stated in the manual. I am very pleased with this buy and would highly recommend these players to anyone looking for a excellent quality portable DVD player.

10 MONTH UPDATE: We use these players all the time. We've taken them on at least 4 vacations. The brackets to mount then on the car seat backs are Fantastic!! The kids also use them to watch movies in their rooms. We bought two and both have worked flawlessly. After 10 months I'm still pleased.
6hrs and 45 mins of battery! Huge screen, headrest attachment for back seat

Reviewer: myhale,
This panasonic is my second portable DVD player, the first being a Mintek which I reckon I paid around $400 for about 6 or 7 years ago. I used it a lot for car trips and plane rides and dropped it a while back so it's got a broken connection part but it still works. I wanted something with a headrest mount for kids in the back seat and longer battery life then 2 hours.
These things have come a long way! I paid $150 for the LS855 and it's got a 1.5inch larger screen. The picture quality is infinitely better on the Panasonic. The sound is louder and better in quality. The battery pack on the Mintek was as huge as the base of the unit itself while the battery pack on the Panasonic is like the size of a huge cigar. The Mintek wouldn't quick forward without the remote...which I found irritating since I didn't want to carry the remote with me. I read from a review that someone couldn't get the Panasonic to quick forward. You hold down the quick foward to toggle and select a quick forward speed and then hit play to stop the ff.
There's a chart in the manual that says you should get 6 hours at lowest brightness using a headphones. I tested this and got 6 hours and 45 minutes. Wow! It was a small dim but certainly visible.
I liked the Sonys too but a similar model in specs has no headrest attachment and was more expensive. The headrest attachment is simple to use and the adjustable screen makes the unit streamlined so your child can't hit it by accident.
The one drawback is that the plastic on the unit is certainly lighter weight and thinner...seems a bit flimsy. But that contributes to it's portability. Pleased viewing. :)
Awesome product

I absolutely like this DVD. I bought it for 4 and 6 yrs olds and they like it. Picture is fantastic, sound is loud (if you need it to be). once i figured out how it works it was fantastic. my kids like it and i delight in my rides in the car, visiting my family and friends when they are busy watching movies. I compared it to Sony but found that Panasonic has better picture and it's cheaper too. Like the product!
